As the summer heat is upon us, this mango pineapple smoothie has become my new go to drink. I used to like the McDonald's pineapple mango smoothie, but I love that I can make my own at home in literally 5 minutes! Just pop the ingredients in the blender and in no time, I can enjoy this sweet and creamy tropical treat on my back patio.

A bonus to making at home is that you can customize to your liking. Sometimes I add in a scoop of vanilla protein powder or top with some chia seeds for added crunch.

Pineapple and mangoes are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants.  In addition, mangoes also have quite a bit of vitamin A and potassium. This is such a sweet treat but also a nutritious and healthy one too.  This smoothie is the perfect way to enjoy those tropical flavored fruits. If you enjoy smoothies, you might also like to try this pineapple banana smoothie or this avocado spinach smoothie.

    Ingredients

Four bowls containing lime juice, diced mango, pineapple chunks, and salt, along with a sprig of mint, are arranged on a pink textured cloth.
    • Mango - A juicy and tropical fruit. Frozen chunks are best, but you can use fresh.
    • Pineapple - A sweet and tart fruit. Like the mango's, frozen chunks are best but can use fresh.
    • Mango Nectar - A sweet mango-based syrup. You can typically find it in your local grocery store. Jumex and Goya are the most popular brands.
    • Ice - Optional ingredient and is only needed if you are using fresh fruit instead of frozen.
    • Mint Leaves - Another optional ingredient but helps give the smoothie a hint of minty flavor. Also, great to use as a garnish.

    Instructions

To make a mango pineapple smoothie, simply blend all ingredients in a blender until you reach a smooth consistency. You'll find the full details here.

A blender filled with a yellow smoothie is topped with chunks of mango.

Place the frozen mango pieces, frozen pineapple pieces, mint leaves (if using) and mango nectar into a blender.

A glass is being filled with a thick, yellow mango smoothie from a jug. Mint leaves and a pink cloth are in the background.

Blend until the mixture reaches a slushie-like texture with no large chunks remaining. Serve immediately.

Hint: I like to use frozen fruit instead of fresh. This not only eliminates the need for ice, which can dilute the flavor, but also ensures a thick and creamy texture. Additionally, adding a splash of coconut water can enhance the tropical taste and provide extra hydration.

    Variations

This smoothie is very versatile. You can take the base ingredients and just add on from there your preferences. Here are a few suggestions to try:

    • Mix in your favorite fruit. Add in avocadoes or banana slices to thicken the smoothie even more. You can also add in peaches, blueberries, or strawberries to change up the flavor profile.
    • Use coconut water. You can add in a splash of coconut water to expand even more on the tropical flavor. Coconut water is full of electrolytes and is lower in calories.
    • Use milk or yogurt. In place of the mango nectar, you can use any type of milk either regular or plant based as well as yogurt to be the thickener for the smoothie. Greek yogurt is a wonderful source of added protein.
    • Add a scoop of protein powder. Add a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder. This is great after a workout for recovery.
    • Add a topping. Top your smoothie with chia seeds, hemp hearts, granola, coconut flakes or sliced almonds to give it a nice crunch.
    • Turn into a smoothie bowl. Instead of drinking through a straw, blend up the smoothie then place in a bowl. Add in your favorite toppings.

Try adding a little strawberry lemonade to the mix for a change of color and flavor.

    Tips

Top tip: Blend using the pulse. By pulsing the blender, the frozen fruit can be broken down into smaller pieces. This allows the blades to blend everything together nice and smoothly.

    • Use frozen fruit. If possible, frozen fruit is the best to use because it will give the smoothie a creamier, richer, and thicker texture without the need for ice.
    • Use a high-powered blender. A high-powered blender is needed when blending frozen fruit and the ice, if needed. These blenders will help the smoothie have a smoother texture.
    • To make the smoothie thicker, add additional frozen fruit or ice until you reach the desired consistency.
    • To make the smoothie thinner, add water until you reach the desired consistency.
    • To cut the sweetness, add a splash of lemon juice. The acidity will help balance out the sweetness.

    Serving suggestions

This smoothie is a great option for a quick breakfast on the go. If you have more time, you might also enjoy it with these egg white frittatas or these waffles.

Smoothies are also great to turn into a smoothie bowls. Just blend up the ingredients and place in a bowl. Top with some granola or chia seeds and you have yourself a wonderful breakfast or snack.Another great way to enjoy this mango pineapple smoothie is after a workout. You can enjoy it with a handful of these candied almonds or even with these lemon ricotta cookies as a post-workout snack.

    Storage

To store any remaining mango pineapple smoothie for later, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate it. To help maintain freshness and flavor, it is best consumed within 24 hours.

You can also freeze your smoothie for up to 3 months. Pour any remaining smoothie into ice cube trays and then transfer the frozen cubes to a freezer bag. These are great when you want a taste of tropical goodness or to cool off on a hot day.

    FAQs

What is the difference between mango nectar and mango juice?

In this recipe, mango nectar is pureed mango mixed with a sugar-based syrup. Nectar is thicker and sweeter than juice. Mango juice is the juice from the pureed mangoes.

Can I use fresh or canned fruit instead of frozen?

Yes, you can use either. For canned fruit, make sure to drain any excess syrup or juice before putting in the blender. If you are using fresh or canned fruit, you will need to blend with ice to make the smoothie have a smooth and thick consistency. Adjust accordingly as you go along.
