I reach for these white chocolate chip cookies when I want a homemade treat without heating the full oven. The small batch makes 12 cookies, enough to share or keep for a few coffee breaks without filling several containers. After making them a few times, I've learned that the white chocolate chips need a little protection from the air fryer's direct heat to keep them from getting too brown. They've become another option in my cookie rotation alongside my small-batch air fryer red velvet cake mix cookies.
I especially like the contrast between the crisp edges, chewy centers, and sweet white chocolate. The dough takes about 10 minutes to prepare, but I leave time for resting and cooling rather than treating this as a 20-minute start-to-finish recipe. Giving the cookies time to cool on the tray makes them easier to lift without breaking. When I want a batch with candy-coated chocolate instead, I make my small-batch air fryer M&M cookies.

Instructions

Combine the butter and sugars. Add the softened butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar to a mixing bowl.

Beat until creamy. Use a hand mixer to beat the butter and sugars until creamy and well combined.

Add the egg yolk and vanilla. Beat on low speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute.

Mix in the dry ingredients. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl, then add to the butter mixture. Mix just until no flour streaks remain.

Add the white chocolate chips. Reserve 2 tablespoons of chips for topping, then add the remaining chips to the dough.

Finish the dough and portion. Fold until the chips are evenly distributed. Place heaping tablespoon portions at least 2 inches apart on a lightly greased, parchment-lined air fryer tray or crisper plate.

Air fry, rest, and cool. Air fry in a preheated air fryer at 325°F for 3 minutes, then cover loosely with securely anchored foil, keeping it clear of the heating element. Cook for another 7 minutes, then leave the cookies inside the switched-off air fryer for 2 minutes. Remove the foil, gently press the reserved chips onto the hot cookies, and let them cool on the tray for 15 minutes before serving.
Tips
Top tip: Look for set edges rather than browned tops. The centers can still look slightly soft when cooking ends; waiting until they look completely firm can produce dry cookies.
- Measure flour carefully. Spoon it into the measuring cup and level it off. Scooping directly from the bag can pack in extra flour and make the cookies dry.
- Use softened butter that still holds its shape. Melted or overly warm butter can cause the cookies to spread too much.
- Start each batch on a cool tray. A hot tray can soften the dough before baking and cause uneven spreading.
- Check later batches earlier. Once the air fryer is thoroughly heated, additional batches may cook faster than the first.
- Test one cookie first. A trial cookie helps you check spreading and timing before committing the rest of the dough.
- Keep waiting dough away from heat. If the kitchen is warm, refrigerate it between batches so the butter doesn't become too soft.

Variations
Change the chips. Use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or semisweet chips in place of some or all of the white chocolate.- Add nuts. Replace 2 tablespoons of chips with chopped macadamias, pecans, or walnuts for crunch.
- Include dried fruit. Swap 2 tablespoons of chips for dried cranberries or chopped dried cherries.
- Try a citrus variation. Add ½ teaspoon of orange or lemon zest to balance the sweetness.
- Add warm spice. Use ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon for a subtle change in flavor.
- Use almond extract. Replace ¼ teaspoon of the vanilla with almond extract for a different flavor without overpowering the cookies.
- Try salted butter. Substitute it for the unsalted butter and omit the added salt.
- Finish with flaky salt. A small pinch on each cookie adds contrast to the sweet white chocolate.
Keep the total amount of chips, nuts, and dried fruit close to the original ½ cup so the dough still holds together well.

Storage
Let the cookies cool completely, then store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight to help preserve their texture.
For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months, with parchment between layers. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
FAQs
Yes. Portion the dough into balls and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze the balls on a parchment-lined tray until firm, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Air fry directly from frozen at 325°F, allowing about 1 to 3 extra minutes as needed. Follow the recipe's foil-covering step after the first 3 minutes, and check for set edges with slightly soft centers.
Yes, double all the ingredients, except the egg yolk. A full egg can be used if the recipe is doubled. Cook in batches with the same spacing rather than crowding more cookies onto each tray. Each batch should need roughly the original cooking time.
No, a standard air fry setting can work. Use the recipe's temperature as a starting point, since airflow and heating vary between models. Follow your appliance's instructions for using parchment and foil.

Recipe
Small-Batch Air Fryer White Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter softened
- 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅔ cup all-purpose flour
- ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ cup white chocolate chips divided (reserve 2 tablespoons for topping the cookies)
OTHERS:
- oil for greasing the tray
Instructions
- Preheat the Air Fryer to 325°F (163°C). Set to 10 minutes.
- In a bowl, mix butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar with a hand mixer until creamy.
- Add the egg yolk and vanilla, then beat on low until light and fluffy, about 1 minute.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt using a spoon or spatula. Then add the mixture to the beaten butter mixture. Combine until no flour streaks appear, but do not overmix.
- Add the white chocolate chips and fold until fully combined.
- Lightly grease the Air Fryer tray and line with parchment paper.
- Scoop 1 heaping tablespoon of cookie dough and place the dough balls at least 2 inches apart.
- Air Fry for 3 minutes, then loosely cover with foil, making sure the sides are completely secured without covering the bottom of the cookies. Continue Air Frying for 7 minutes.
- Once the Air Fryer Oven automatically turns off (after the 10-minute set), leave the cookies with foil in the cooking chamber for 2 minutes.
- While the cookies are hot, lightly press white chocolate chips on top.
- If using an Air Fryer with a basket, place the cookie dough on a parchment-lined crisper plate. Loosely cover with foil after 3 minutes and follow accordingly.
- Remove from the Air Fryer cooking chamber, remove the foil, place the tray on a baking sheet, and allow the cookies to cool for 15 minutes before removing from the tray and serving.
