I've always been a big fan of frozen treats, but I don't always want something heavy or overly sweet. That's why I created this frozen yogurt recipe. It's creamy, refreshing, and has just the right amount of natural sweetness from the berries. It's delicious on its own or topped with a dollop of whipped coconut cream or air fryer granola.

I've made this for everything from casual nights to weekend get-togethers with a friend. It's always a hit because it's light, flavorful, and pairs well with other treats like gluten-free oatmeal cookies or fresh fruit. I also like that I can pull it together anytime and have something special ready for the next day.

    Ingredients

Three bowls containing yogurt, blueberries, and powder, plus two lemon halves and a wooden citrus reamer, arranged on a light countertop.Pin
    • Blueberries - Adds natural sweetness, vibrant color, and fresh berry flavor.
    • Monkfruit with allulose or equivalent sweetener - Provides sweetness without adding extra sugar or calories.
    • Lemon juice - Brightens the flavor and enhances the natural taste of the blueberries.
    • Unsweetened Greek yogurt - Creates a creamy base with a rich texture and provides protein for a more balanced treat.

    Instructions

I make this frozen treat using a Ninja CREAMi, but you should be able to use a regular ice cream maker for churning.

Add blueberries, sweetener, and lemon juice to small blender. Blend until strawberries are puréed. Allow mixture to sit for 10 minutes.

If the mixture is not smooth and creamy, you can do a re-spin. If the mixture is too soft, freeze for a couple of hours before scooping into a bowl to enjoy.

Hint: Use very ripe blueberries or briefly cook them down to release their juices before mixing. This gives the yogurt a richer flavor and better color.

    Variations

Here are some easy ways to customize the blueberry frozen yogurt recipe:

    • Use cooked blueberries for a jammier flavor. Simmer the blueberries for a few minutes before blending to get a deeper, more concentrated berry taste and a smoother texture.
    • Swap in Greek yogurt for a tangier, thicker base. This makes the frozen yogurt taste a little richer and gives it a denser, creamier scoop.
    • Add lemon zest for a brighter blueberry flavor. A small amount of zest helps the blueberry taste pop and keeps the frozen yogurt from tasting flat after freezing.

    Tips

Top tip: Taste and adjust sweetness. Blueberry tartness can vary, so add sweetener gradually.

    • Start with a smooth base. Blend your blueberries and yogurt together until completely smooth before freezing. Any chunks of fruit can create icy bits.
    • Use the right setting. For yogurt-based recipes, the "Lite Ice Cream" or "Sorbet" setting usually gives the best texture. You can always re-spin if needed.
    • Add mix-ins last. If you want nuts, chocolate chips, or fruit chunks, add them after the first spin and run the "Mix-In" cycle.
    • Make popsicles. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds instead of churning.

    Storage

Store frozen blueberry yogurt in an airtight container to keep it fresh and prevent freezer burn. Make sure to press a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface before sealing to minimize ice crystals. When ready to eat, let it thaw in the fridge for a few minutes to soften slightly for the best texture.

    FAQs

Do you have to use fresh blueberries?

No. Frozen blueberries work well, too. Just thaw and drain them to avoid extra liquid in the yogurt.

How long does homemade blueberry yogurt keep in the freezer?

It's best eaten within 1 to 2 months for freshness and flavor. Store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh longer.

Can I make this recipe dairy-free?

Absolutely. You can substitute Greek yogurt with a plant-based yogurt like coconut, cashew or almond yogurt for a dairy-free version.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup blueberries
    • ¼ cup Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener with Allulose or equivalent sweetener
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
    • 1 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt

    Instructions

    • Add blueberries, sweetener, and lemon juice to small blender. Blend until strawberries are puréed. Allow mixture to sit for 10 minutes.
    • Add yogurt and blend until well combined.
    • Pour mixture in CREAMi pint container and freeze for 24 hours.
    • Process in the Ninja CREAMi on the Lite ice cream. If mixture is not smooth and creamy, you can re-spin.

    Notes

If desired, you can use 2 tablespoons of Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener with Allulose and 10 drops SweetLeaf liquid stevia for the sweetener. You can use sugar or maple syrup if you don't want to use low-carb sweeteners. For a sweeter frozen yogurt, up the sweetener to ⅓ cup.
For vegan frozen yogurt, I like to use unsweetened Cocojune coconut yogurt.
If leftovers in the freezer get too hard to scoop, you can respin. If needed, added a splash of milk to the frozen yogurt before you respin for a creamier texture.
