I love making desserts in the air fryer. It is so fun and easy. Whether it be for family, guests, or myself I can always have a delicious dessert just waiting to enjoy in a matter of minutes.

I was so happy to learn that I can make this chocolate puff pastry in the air fryer in just 15 minutes. There is no mess, and the air fryer takes care of all the work.

Just like my Brie and Cranberry in puff pastry, this chocolate with puff pastry tastes amazing and is a crowd pleaser. By using a puff pastry sheet, I can create individual pastries stuffed with chocolate. I'm using an egg wash to get that golden brown crispy finish to the top and sprinkling a little sugar to add a bit of pop along with some extra sweetness.

These pain au chocolat aka chocolate croissants are so delicious that they melt in your mouth. You're going to absolutely love them!

    Reasons to Love

    • Minimal Ingredients. This chocolate with puff pastry recipe is only 4 ingredients and technically 3 since the confectioner's sugar can be optional. You can create a deliciously amazing dessert with just a few ingredients. It is sure to impress any guests.
    • Air Fryer. You guys know by now I love using my air fryer. They are so versatile, and this chocolate puff pastry can be made in just 15 minutes with no mess.  For this recipe, I'm using an Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven. Not all cook the same way so make sure to keep watch when you make these the first time.
    • Easy Preparations. Using a sheet of puff pastry makes this dessert so easy to assemble. No need to worry about making dough. You just roll it out, place chocolate in the center and refold to create the pastry shape. It is so easy to prepare, and you can totally do this in advance too.

    Ingredients

A baking tray with a sheet of puff pastry, a bowl of chocolate chips, an egg, and a spoonful of flour on parchment paper.
    • Puff Pastry: I use a store-bought ready-to-bake puff pastry that I thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
    • Chocolate Morsels: I used Nestle Toll House brand of semi-sweet morsels but feel free to use your favorite semi-sweet chocolate chip brand.
    • Egg: This is for the egg wash to make sure the pastry is nice and golden brown.
    • Confectioner's Sugar: This is used to lightly dust the puff pastry with an extra touch of sweetness before serving.

Scroll down to the recipe card for quantities used.

    Instructions

Let's gather our ingredients and pre-heat the air fryer to 370°F. Then, just follow these easy step-by-step directions.

A copper spoon filled with chocolate chips held above a sheet of puff pastry and a bowl of more chips.

Unfold puff pastry on a prepared tray lined with parchment paper and dusted with some flour. Cut into 6 equal rectangles.

Uncooked filled puff pastry on a baking sheet with parchment paper, next to a small bowl of chocolate chips.

Place semi-sweet chocolate morsels at the center of each rectangle of puff pastry. Fold puff pastry on both sides.

Two uncooked pastries on parchment-lined baking tray, with a hand holding a fork pressing edges of one pastry.

Press the end tips with a fork. Make two slits on top of the pastry dough.

A person brushes egg wash on pastries on a baking tray, with a bowl of egg wash nearby.

Gently transfer chocolate stuffed puff pastry onto the Air Fryer tray. Lightly brush each chocolate stuffed puff pastry with beaten egg.

Three golden-brown pastry rolls on a black baking tray.

Air fry for 12 to 15 minutes or until they completely puff and are golden brown.

Freshly baked chocolate-filled pastry dusted with powdered sugar on a white surface, with a sieve and extra chocolate chips nearby.

Transfer to a serving plate and lightly dust with confectioners' sugar using a sieve.

Hint: Brush the edges of the pastry pieces with a little water to help them seal. Properly sealing the pastry will help prevent the chocolate from leaking out during cooking.

    Variations

    • Use different chocolate. You can easily use whichever chocolate you enjoy the most whether it be dark, milk or even white chocolate for this recipe. It can be morsels or chips.
    • Use a different filing. If chocolate is not your thing, might I suggest to try filing the pastry with one of the following: Nutella, cookie butter, hazelnut spread, cream cheese, or your favorite jam or pie filing.
    • Add a topping. In addition to the confectionery sugar, you can also drizzle chocolate or caramel sauce over the pastry. Honey would taste amazing too. This whipped cream makes a fantastic topping as well.

Check out my cranberry puff pastry bites if you need an idea for changing the filling.

    Tips

Top tip: You cannot use frozen dough for this recipe. It will need to be thawed. Make sure the dough is still cold when you put it in the air fryer but not too soft or it will not rise.

    • Pre-heat air fryer oven. Puff pastry needs a hot air fryer for the dough to rise and be fluffy. By making sure the oven is set and timer is on will help guarantee a light and airy pastry.
    • Lightly spray air fryer tray with oil to avoid puff pastry from sticking, if you have an old air fryer tray.
    • If you prefer a neat puff pastry, place the seam at the bottom.
    • If you prefer the puff pastry to puff unevenly, place the seam at the top.
    • If you chill puff pastry after stuffing the chocolates for a few extra minutes, it will puff more in the air fryer.

    Serving suggestions

This chocolate puff pastry recipe pairs well with a cup of coffee, matcha, tea or ice cold milk.

It tastes amazing topped with this whipped cream or a side of fresh berries. I like to enjoy it as a light dessert after salmon alfredo pasta or lasagna.

    Storage

You can store this chocolate puff pastry in an airtight sealed container on the countertop for up to three days. After that, it needs to be placed in an airtight sealed container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. I truly don't think they would last that long!

    FAQs

Why is my puff pastry flat?

This could be due to the temperature of your air fryer not being warm enough. Also, it could be that when thawing, the puff pastry got too warm. You want it to still be cold. Next time, place it back in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes for it to chill if you think it is not cold enough.

Can I use filo dough instead of puff pastry?

No, unfortunately this cannot be substituted. They are two different types of dough and will not yield the same results.

Can these chocolate puff pastries be made ahead of time?

Absolutely! In fact, after stuffing the chocolates if you place them back in the refrigerator to chill, they will puff more in the air fryer.

I just wanted to tell you these chocolate puff pastries were a hit for my daughter's sleepover. I let the girls make these for their dessert, and the air fryer made it easy for them to bake.

      HI,
I don't have a air fryer, I have a June oven so how long and what temp should I bake them for?
      Thank you.
      Hugs,

I'm not familiar with a June oven, but for a regular oven, it would be set at 400°F for about 16 to 19 minutes. If the June is a convection, I'd think you could do it at 375°F for about the same time.
