There's something undeniably magical about the pairing steak with mushrooms. While both ingredients are delightful on their own, they truly shine when they come together.
We like to add a balsamic sauce to elevate this fantastic combination even further. The slight tanginess and sweetness of balsamic vinegar provide an incredible contrast to the rich meat and earthy mushrooms. As you take your first bite, you'll be greeted with an explosion of flavors.

Instructions
Ready to make this steak recipe? Grab your ingredients and follow these easy step-by-step directions.
Slice the mushrooms if needed.
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small skillet over low to medium heat. Sauté the minced garlic for about 30 seconds. Add the mushrooms, salt, balsamic vinegar, and thyme. Cook until the mushrooms are brown and tender. Remove mushroom balsamic sauce and keep warm.
In an 8-inch cast-iron skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Season both sides of the steak with salt and pepper.
Cook the meat in the skillet over medium-high heat, turning once, to medium done, 2 to 4 minutes each side.
Remove steak from pan and cut into thin slices.
Serve steak slices with the mushroom balsamic sauce spooned on top. Drizzle additional vinegar on top if desired.
Hint: You should let a seared sirloin steak rest for about 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Resting allows the juices within the steak to redistribute, which helps ensure that the meat remains juicy and flavorful when you cut into it.
Variations
Want to customize the recipe to suit your own taste preferences? Here are a few ideas you can try:
- Mushrooms - use cremini or portobello mushrooms instead of the usual button mushrooms. These different types of mushrooms can add unique flavors and textures to your dish.
- Veggies - add some chopped onions or bell peppers for an extra layer of taste and texture.
- Cheese - sprinkle some crumbled blue cheese or feta cheese over the finished dish to make it more indulgent.
- Sauce - for a more substantial sauce, add more balsamic vinegar and a bit of vegetable broth. Stir and let it reduce until it thickens into a sauce. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

Tips
Top tip: Season the steak generously with salt and pepper just before cooking. This helps to create a flavorful crust.
- Preheat the Cast Iron Pan: Heat the cast iron pan over medium-high heat. You want it to be hot before you start cooking.
- Sear the Steak: Place the steak in the hot, dry cast iron pan and sear it for a few minutes on each side until you achieve your desired level of doneness. It's best to use high heat. Use tongs to flip the steak, not a fork, to avoid losing juices.
- Doneness: Use an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the steak to ensure accuracy when determining its doneness. Remove around 120°F (49°C) for rare, 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare, or 140°F (60°C) for medium.
- Slice and Serve: Slice the rested steak against the grain, which ensures tenderness. Serve the steak with the mushroom balsamic sauce drizzled over the top.
Serving suggestions
When it comes to serving steak and mushrooms with balsamic sauce, the possibilities for pairings and plating ideas are endless. One classic option is to serve it alongside a bed of creamy mashed potatoes or buttery air fryer home fries.
For a lighter alternative, consider pairing this dish with a crisp green salad or sautéed vegetables. The fresh crunchiness of lettuce, cucumber slices, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes adds a refreshing contrast to the richness of the steak. Alternatively, air frying vegetables like asparagus or Brussels sprouts in olive oil will provide a nutrient-packed side that balances out the meal perfectly.
Storage
To store steak and mushrooms with balsamic sauce, it is important to separate the two components. First, remove any leftover sauce from the steak and place it in an airtight container. Make sure to label and date the container for easy identification. Store the sauce in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
To freeze, wrap the steak tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent air exposure and freezer burn. Place the wrapped steak in a resealable freezer bag or freezer-safe container. Label and date it as well before storing it in the freezer. The frozen steak can be stored for up to 4 months.
When ready to consume, thaw both the steak and sauce overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat the sauce on low heat on the stovetop while searing or grilling the thawed steak until desired doneness is achieved. Serve together for a delicious meal!
