I've made these Oreo and Reese's cups bats over the years for Halloween. I like that I can put together a quick festive treat with simple ingredients. Chilling the peanut butter cups first is helpful on warmer fall days because they stay firm while attaching the wings and eyes.

This recipe makes just two bats, which is perfect when I want a small treat instead of a whole tray of sweets. If I'm putting together a larger Halloween spread, I'll make more and add a savory options such as mummy wrapped brie and my spider web taco dip alongside the candy treats.

You can chill the assembled bats or enjoy them right away.

    Tips

Top tip: It's best to make the bats shortly before serving or keep them chilled so the cookies stay crisp and the decorations remain in place.

    • Choose intact cookies. Check the Oreo before starting so you have two unbroken rounds to divide into four wings.
    • Use a gentle sawing motion. A small serrated knife can give you more control if the cookie rounds tend to break unevenly when snapped.
    • Keep the wing pieces similar in size. Matching halves make the two bats look more balanced once assembled.
    • Handle the peanut butter cups by the edges. This helps prevent fingerprints or dents in the chocolate coating.
    • Use tweezers for the candy eyes. Clean kitchen tweezers can make positioning the tiny eyes easier and more precise.
    • Arrange the eyes before pressing them down. Check their placement first so you don't have to move them and leave marks in the chocolate.
    • Scale the recipe as needed. Since one Oreo and two peanut butter cups make two bats, it's simple to multiply the ingredients for a party while keeping the original small-batch proportions.

    Variations

    • Try different Oreo flavors. Chocolate, dark chocolate, or other seasonal varieties can change up the flavor while still providing dark wings for the bats.
    • Swap the peanut butter cups. Use another small round chocolate candy as the body if you want a different filling or don't want peanut butter.
    • Use mini peanut butter cups. Miniatures make smaller bats that work well for a Halloween dessert board or party tray.
    • Change the candy eyes. Different sizes or colors of edible eyes can give each bat its own expression.
    • Use melted chocolate as glue. A small amount of melted chocolate can replace the Oreo filling for attaching the wings and eyes.
    • Turn them into bat pops. Carefully add a lollipop stick to the peanut butter cup before decorating to make individual Halloween party treats.

    Storage

You can store the Reese's cups Halloween Oreo bats in a single layer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving so the peanut butter cups soften slightly. For the best texture, enjoy them within a day or two, since the Oreo wings can gradually soften in the refrigerator.

    Notes

If the weather is hot (greater than 80°F/27°C), chill the Reese's cups for 15 minutes before attaching the Oreo cookies and candy eyes. Chill for at least 15 minutes after preparing them, if needed.
If the weather is hot or humid, remove the filling immediately and break the Oreo cookies when you open the package. In hot or humid weather, the Oreo cookies will soften within a few minutes after opening.
