Whether you're cooking it up at home or grabbing some from your local restaurant, this dish will impress your taste buds and leave you feeling satisfied.

    Ingredients for honey butter chicken.

Here is a list of what you'll need:

    • Boneless chicken breast tenderloins
    • Cornstarch
    • Flour
    • Sparkling water
    • Garlic powder
    • Onion powder
    • Salt and black pepper
    • Vegetable oil for frying

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

To make the honey butter chicken recipe, you'll need to heat up several inches of frying oil in a pot or frying pan with tall sides. Although air frying is possible, it won't give the classic fried exterior.

Adding flour to bowl with chicken.

Place the chicken tenderloins and sparkling water into a mixing bowl. Dump in flour.

Adding cornstarch to bowl with chicken.

    Add in the cornstarch.

    Adding onion powder to bowl.

    Add onion powder.

    Adding garlic powder to bowl.

Add garlic powder. Mix well to coat chicken with wet batter.

Adding prepared chicken to hot oil.

Fry the chicken in the heated oil by carefully adding each piece to the hot oil.

    Removing fried chicken from oil.

Fry until golden brown and cooked through. Drain each piece on paper towel lined plate and set aside.

    Melting butter in skillet.

While the chicken is frying, add the butter to a skillet over medium heat.

    Adding honey to skillet.

    Add the honey.

    Adding soy sauce to skillet.

    Stir in the soy sauce.

Adding honey butter sauce to fried chicken.

Drizzle the sauce over the chicken, and toss to coat before serving.

    Variations

If you want to switch up this Korean honey butter fried chicken, there are plenty of variations. You’ll find a few suggestions below.

    • Add spicy seasoning. If you enjoy spicy food, add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the glaze for an extra kick. You can even make it a coconut sriracha honey butter sauce.
    • Use different spices in the breading mixture. Additional spices like paprika or curry powder can add depth of flavor to your chicken.
    • Try baking or air frying instead of cooking the chicken in oil. Coat the chicken with the wet batter and bake or air fry at 400°F until cooked through and golden brown.
    • Experiment with different flour or coatings, like panko breadcrumbs for a crispy texture.

    Tips

If this is your first time making the recipe, there are a few tips and tricks.

    • Use a heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven with tall sides to fit several inches of oil but isn’t too wide.
    • Heat your oil to 350°F before carefully adding each piece of chicken.
    • Fry until golden brown on both sides before removing from the hot oil and setting on a paper towel-lined plate.
    • Coat the chicken pieces well with the sauce.

    Serving suggestions

Serving this juicy chicken dish with sticky rice is a classic way to serve it. Add some steamed vegetables or a side salad for a complete meal for one.

It’s also tasty as a honey butter fried chicken sandwich. Just place it inside a bun or between bread slices. Add some air fryer frozen potato fries on the side.

    Storage

If you plan to eat the chicken within a few days, you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will keep the chicken fresh for up to five days.

If you want to store it longer than that, you can also freeze it. Place the chicken in a freezer-safe bag or container and freeze for up to three months. When ready to eat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven or microwave until warm throughout.

    FAQ

Can you use fresh garlic instead of powder?

You can use fresh garlic instead of powder in fried chicken breading. Fresh garlic adds a more intense flavor than powder and can be easily incorporated into the breading mix. For best results, mince the garlic finely before adding it to the mix, and make sure it is evenly distributed

Why does the recipe use sparkling water?

Sparkling water can add a light, crispy texture to the fried chicken batter. The carbon dioxide in the water has tiny air bubbles that make air pockets within the coating to help give it some crunch when cooked.

Can you use an air fryer instead of oil frying?

Air fryers are a great alternative to traditional deep-frying since they require less oil and produce a crispy, crunchy result. However, you won't get the same deep-fried taste or texture.
