Microwaves are great for heating up leftovers, but they can do a lot more than just that. From cleaning to cooking hacks, your microwave might just be the most versatile appliance in your kitchen. Here are some surprisingly useful ways to put it to work.

    Disinfect Sponges

Tired of funky-smelling sponges? Pop them in the microwave for about two minutes to kill bacteria and germs. Just make sure the sponge is damp before heating it up, so it doesn't catch fire.

    Peel Garlic Faster

Peeling garlic can be tedious, but not when you use your microwave. Heat the cloves for 10-15 seconds, and the skins will slip right off with ease.

    Freshen Up Stale Bread

Microwaving stale bread might seem odd, but it works. Wrap the bread in a damp paper towel and microwave it for 10 seconds to soften it up.

    Dry Fresh Herbs

If you need dried herbs but only have fresh ones, your microwave can help. Lay the herbs between two paper towels and heat them for a minute or two until they're dry and crumbly.

    Juice Citrus Fruits More Efficiently

Get more juice out of lemons, limes, and oranges by microwaving them for 15-20 seconds. The heat loosens up the fibers inside, making them easier to squeeze.

    Remove Stamps

Peel off stamps by placing a few drops of water on them and microwaving the envelope for 20 seconds. The moisture will soften the adhesive, making it easy to remove the stamp.

    Make Your Own Heating Pads

Need a heating pad? Fill a clean sock with uncooked rice, tie it up, and microwave it for about a minute. Instant warmth for aches and pains.

    Soften Brown Sugar

Hardened brown sugar can be a headache when you're baking. Simply put it in a bowl with a damp paper towel on top and microwave it for 20-30 seconds to restore its softness.

    Sterilize Garden Soil

This one might sound crazy, but you can actually sterilize small amounts of garden soil in your microwave. Heat damp soil for about 90 seconds to kill off any bugs or fungi before planting seeds.

    Soften Honey

Microwave honey on medium power for about 30 seconds, checking after each interval. Stir gently and repeat the process if necessary, heating in short bursts until the honey has returned to a smooth, liquid consistency.
