Dishwashers are a modern kitchen staple, saving us loads of time and effort. But not everything belongs in that convenient machine. Some items can get damaged, or worse, damage the dishwasher itself. Here’s a list of 15 things you should keep out of your dishwasher.

The heat and moisture in a dishwasher can cause wooden items to warp, crack, or lose their finish. Instead, wash them by hand with mild soap and water.

    Nonstick Cookware

Even if your nonstick pans are labeled as dishwasher-safe, the high temperatures and harsh detergents can wear down the coating over time. Handwashing prolongs their life.

    Cast Iron Skillets

Dishwashers strip away the seasoning that makes cast iron nonstick and rust-resistant. Clean cast iron by hand, using a stiff brush and hot water.

    Crystal Glassware

Delicate crystal can chip or crack in the dishwasher. The detergents and heat can also cause clouding, so it’s best to handwash with care.

The vacuum seal that keeps your drinks hot or cold can be damaged by the high heat of a dishwasher. Wash these items by hand to keep them working properly.

    Copper Cookware

Copper pots and pans are beautiful but delicate. Dishwashers can tarnish the finish and cause discoloration. Stick to handwashing with gentle cleaners.

    Gold-Plated or Decorated Dishes

Gold trim and intricate designs can fade or peel in the dishwasher. To keep them looking their best, handwash these dishes carefully.

    Sharp Knives

Dishwashers can dull sharp knife blades quickly. Plus, they can be dangerous when unloading. Wash knives by hand to keep them sharp and safe.

    Aluminum Cookware

Aluminum can react with dishwasher detergent, leading to discoloration and pitting. Handwashing is a better option to maintain its look.

    Fine China

Antique or fine china can easily chip or lose its delicate patterns in the dishwasher. Handwash with a soft sponge to preserve their beauty.

    Graters and Microplanes

The small holes in graters and microplanes can trap food, and dishwashers often don’t clean them well. Handwash thoroughly to avoid clogs and buildup.
